Do Now: Are there “doors” in all of our lives that provide us with an escape from the demands of society? What are they? How do we find them? Do we often take them when they are offered?

Today’s Objective:
  • to examine how and why archetypes represent the universal human experience
  • to use close reading to examine how and why authors use specific archetypes to reveal meaning
  • to identify the characteristics of “The Hero’s Journey”

Agenda:

2) Complete Step 1 of “The Door in the Wall” handout individually
3) In pairs, complete Step 2 in pairs
4) Class discussion: review findings from handout
5) What is the hero’s journey archetype?
6) Summarizer: Is escaping the demands of society a desirable goal? Is this escape natural? Is it possible? Is it healthy?
